Roane State Community College physical therapist assistant (PTA) students raised $350 to help a Scott County 12-year-old who suffered a spinal cord stroke and was paralyzed from the waist down.

The funds will help the family of Jerica Stanley purchase items Jerica needs for home therapy. Jerica’s mother, Crystal, said the family needs to redo Jerica’s shower, put concrete around the home’s garage to make it accessible and purchase exercise equipment.

“There are a million little things we need to do,” Crystal Stanley said. “Humbling is a word I’ve used a lot to describe the support from the whole community. It’s nice to see students who care and want to help.”

Students Andrew Adkins of Pioneer and Savannah Cox of Robbins presented the check to Stanley and her daughter on behalf of the college’s Physical Therapist Assistant Club.

“We heard about the story, and we wanted to help out,” Adkins said.

Jerica, a student at Fairview Elementary School in Huntsville, was at a friend’s house playing when her legs began to hurt. Within minutes, she was unable to move her legs. She has undergone a battery of tests, but doctors are unsure what caused the spinal cord stroke.
