Nearly 40 Anderson County Schools students are participating in Roane State’s Middle College program.

Nearly 40 students from Anderson County Schools will have a chance to graduate from high school with a diploma and a two-year associate degree through Roane State Community College’s new Middle College launching this fall at Roane State’s Oak Ridge campus.

Offered in partnership with Anderson County Schools, this is Roane State’s second Middle College program. The first began last fall with students from Roane County Schools.

“We’re very excited to welcome Anderson County students to Middle College, and we greatly appreciate the support and partnership of Anderson County Schools to create this opportunity for students,” said Dr. Diane Ward, Roane State vice president for student learning.

For years, high school students have been able to earn some college credit while in high school through Roane State’s dual studies courses. Middle College offers students an opportunity to complete 60 hours (four semesters) of college credit, more courses than most students can typically take through dual studies alone.

After earning an associate degree in high school, students who attend a university could start as juniors and finish their bachelor’s degree just two years after high school.

Candidates for Middle College are rising juniors who scored 22 or above on the PLAN test, a pre-test for the ACT.  The Anderson County program includes 19 students from Anderson County High School and 17 students from Clinton High School. Middle College classes are scheduled in the morning, allowing students to return to their high schools in the afternoons for activities such as sports, yearbook and band.

During the first year, students take the same general education courses — courses all college students must take — in English, science, math and additional subjects. During their second year, students take different classes based on their major. Students in the same major take the same classes. An advisor and an academic coach are assigned to work with Middle College students.
