Three Roane State Community College students attended a major technology conference thanks to a grant the college received from NASA.
The students participated in the recent IEEE SoutheastCon event in Norfolk, Va. Their trip was made possible through Roane Sate’s NASA grant. The grant provides scholarships for students in technical fields and funds student participation in learning opportunities such as the IEEE conference.
The students who attended the conference are each NASA scholarship recipients: Kyley Coy, a biology major from Kingston; Jaime Kilby, a biology major from Ten Mile; and Corey Stafford, a pre-engineering major from Harriman.
IEEE SoutheastCon brought together computer scientists, engineers, faculty and students. Topics included power and sustainable energy, nanotechnology, and robotics and computer vision. In addition to attending sessions, the Roane State students collaborated with students from Western Carolina University and The Citadel on a group project related to robotics.
“Giving students an opportunity to speak to leading experts and work with university students greatly enhances their education,” said Dr. Phillip Hyun, Roane State assistant professor of physics. “We are thankful to have the NASA grant funds available for these types of activities for our students.”
