News: Roane State's EMT program will be offered this fall at the Scott County campus

June 1, 2016

If you are interested in a career in emergency medicine, you can get the education you need this fall at Roane State Community College's Scott County campus.

Roane State's emergency medical technician (EMT) courses will be offered at night this fall, allowing students to work during the day and train for a new career in the evenings. Classes will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5-10:30 p.m.

"We are very excited to offer the EMT program here on campus," campus director Sharon Baird said. "Emergency medicine provides opportunities to work full-time or part-time, and there are many opportunities to advance in the profession."

Roane State's 15-week program prepares students to become licensed emergency medical technicians. For an EMT, no day is ordinary. A shift can include hours of waiting and then, suddenly, switching into overdrive to respond to a four-car accident with injuries. The work is stressful, physical and incredibly rewarding. EMTs get to help people on their worst days and often save lives.

The average beginning salary for EMTs in Scott County ranges between $18,000 and $20,000 per year.

If you are interested in learning more about becoming a licensed EMT or other programs, please contact Sharon Baird at the Scott County campus at 663-3878 or bairdsw@roanestate.edu.

Fall classes begin Aug. 22.
