Roane State Community College will use new technology this fall to teach two financial services courses in a “virtual classroom.”
Roane State’s two-year financial services program prepares students to work for companies such as credit unions, banks and insurance agencies. In August, two program courses will be taught through the college’s Highfive video conferencing software.
“Highfive is unique because it’s a seamless experience, like a virtual classroom,” said Dr. Jamie Stringer, Roane State assistant vice president for student services, enrollment, and innovation. “With Highfive, we can deliver a live class to any device: laptops, phones or tablets. If a bank wanted its employees to take our financial services courses, for example, the employees could participate at their bank because we can stream the courses to their conference room. The interaction and quality are almost like being in the classroom. For students on the go, Highfive can deliver a live, interactive lecture straight to their phone.”
Dr. Stringer said Roane State is the only Tennessee community college to offer courses through Highfive.
“This is cutting edge technology that makes education more accessible to more people no matter where they are or what kind of device they prefer,” Dr. Stringer said.
Roane State will offer FNCE 1320 Consumer Lending and FNCE 2310 Money and Banking this fall via Highfive. David Bradshaw, area manager for the Oak Ridge branch of Pinnacle Financial Partners, teaches Consumer Lending, and Chris Ahler, investment advisor representative with Visionary Horizons Wealth Management, teaches Money and Banking.
“The combination of our expert instructors and cutting edge technology means our financial services program can offer students and employers high-quality and relevant classes on their schedule,” program director Mike Farmer said. “We piloted the Highfive technology this spring and are excited to expand our offerings this fall.”
