HUNTSVILLE, Tenn. – As the first Scott County campus student ever elected to a leadership position in Roane State’s chapter of an international honor society, Kristin Lewis has hit the ground running.
She’s making plans to host the “Secret City Car Show” on Oct. 7 on Roane State’s Oak Ridge campus as a fundraiser to pay for her attendance at the April 2018 meeting of “Catalyst.”
That’s the name of the centennial convention of the world’s largest, most prestigious two-year honor society – Phi Theta Kappa.
Since June, Lewis, 18, has been getting accustomed to her new duties as vice president of fellowship for the honor society’s Roane State chapter – Beta Alpha Chi – which has nearly 500 members on the college’s nine campuses.
She said she’ll be making presentations to fellow students about the honor society “to encourage others to get involved in order to acknowledge academic excellence.” She will also be attending various honor society-related events.
Lewis, now in her sophomore year at Roane State, has a 3.75 grade point average. The daughter of Matt and Daphne Lewis, she has a sister, Katelin, who graduated from Roane State and is a pre-kindergarten teacher in Oneida.
Kristin Lewis’s other activities include helping in fundraisers for the East 63 Volunteer Fire Department, where her father is the chief and her sister is a captain.
She’s also a substitute teacher in the Oneida School Special School District and works at the Mustard Seed Boutique in Oneida.
Lewis says she’ll be transferring to the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in the fall semester of 2018 and plans to major in political science with a minor in elementary education.
Since she’ll have an associate’s degree when she transfers, she’ll receive a scholarship to help with UT expenses.
Lewis is enthusiastic about her Roane State experience. She said the Scott County campus is convenient to her home in the county’s Fairview community, and the college is providing an affordable path to higher education.
Lewis said Roane State “influenced me significantly in my decision to further my education.”
