Wearing outlandish headwear, oversize spectacles and colorful boas, Roane State students are taking a break from the books to mug for the camera at a “selfie studio” during an annual springtime rite.
It’s part of this year’s edition of the “Spring Fling,” one of three annual events to “celebrate the students,” says Corey Reed, the college’s student engagement coordinator. There’s also the “Welcome Back” event when school resumes in August, and the “Fall Festival,” an autumnal version of Spring Fling.
Now through March 27, students are being treated to free food, selfies they can email or text, and T-shirts. The selfie studio is this year’s special event, Reed said, while similar activities in the past have included tie-dyed T-shirts and balloon artistry.
Reed, a Roane State alumnus, said he ordered hundreds of T-shirts embossed with an Instagram-themed image of a student at the beach for the event.
