David Mahan
Free soup, sandwiches and other items were on the mid-week menu at Roane State’s Cumberland County campus during the spring semester.
The meals – different each time - were courtesy of the Baptist Collegiate Ministry, a ministry of the Cumberland Plateau Baptist Association of Churches.
“We saw such a need here,” said David Mahan, pastor of Oaklawn Baptist Church in Crossville “Some kids are here all day.”
Free lunches for students are often provided at churches as a public service. “That idea has been around for years,” Mahan said. It’s not often, however, that church members bring meals to schools, he said.
Mahan said Oaklawn Baptist launched the program at Roane State during the fall semester. Other members of the Baptist Collegiate Ministry have joined the effort, and members of eight area churches have participated, he said.
