News: Roane State paramedic students undergo PHTLS training

Students in Roane State Community College’s Paramedics program are shown as they treat a woman in a scenario where she is simulating injuries sustained after falling out of the back of a moving truck.

July 10, 2018

KNOXVILLE – One mock victim was mangled and had bones broken when his riding lawnmower overturned on him. Another mock victim received a severe case of “road rash” when she fell from the back of a moving truck.

Those were the scenarios that participants in Roane State Community College’s paramedic program recently faced as part of their Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) training.

That instruction is designed to improve the quality of trauma care and decrease the chances of patients dying before they arrive at hospitals.

Taught in 64 countries, PHTLS is regarded as the global gold standard in prehospital trauma education. It was developed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma.

The instruction from Roane State faculty members Mark Bodine, Marty Young, Tom Herron, Tracy Banta and Roger Badger is a requirement before students undergo testing to earn paramedic licenses.

Students now taking the training are scheduled to complete the semester by the end of July and become eligible to test for their licenses.
