News: Roane State nursing students score well on licensing exam

March 20, 2019

When it comes to the equivalent of their final exam, this class of future nurses gets an “A.”

The 70 students in Roane State’s 2018 nursing class continued the community college’s tradition of excellence, with 92.86 percent of them passing the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN) on their first try.

Graduates of nursing programs must take and pass the exam, and Roane State nursing students “have historically performed extremely well on this exam,” Roane State Health Sciences Dean Patricia Jenkins said.

The Roane State pass rate exceeds both the state and natural averages, she said. The community college’s nursing program “is highly regarded in the local healthcare community,” she added.

For years, graduates have had a “stellar” job placement rate of more than 95 percent, Jenkins said.

The Roane State Nursing Program admitted its first class in the fall of 1980 “and has been educating future nurses to provide competent, safe nursing care since that time,” she said.

Roane State is a two-year college providing transfer programs, career-preparation programs and continuing education. Founded in 1971, the college has campuses in Crossville, Harriman, Huntsville, Jamestown, Knoxville, LaFollette, Lenoir City, Oak Ridge and Wartburg.
