Categories of Essential Functions Definition Example of Technical Standard
Critical thinking Critical thinking sufficient for problem analysis, evaluation and resolution Identify cause/effect relationships in Health Information department systems and workflow. Develop, analyze, revise and implement procedures to meet objectives
Interpersonal skills Interpersonal activities sufficient to interact with patients, fellow workers and medical staff from a variety of social, emotional, cultural and intellectual backgrounds Establish rapport with patients/clients, colleagues and physicians
Communication Communication abilities sufficient for interaction with others in verbal and written form Explain and train employees. Write clear correspondence. Read and interpret health information
Mobility Physical abilities sufficient to move about within the department, often in small spaces Move around desks in area, climb and bend to file and retrieve records.
Motor skills Gross and fine motor skills sufficient to perform health information skills Operation of computer equipment, microfilm reader, printer, fax and retrieve health records
Hearing Auditory ability sufficient to perform primary health information department function Hear instructions from supervisors/physicians, answer phone, and hear audible signals from computer
Visual Visual ability sufficient to gather and process health information Read health records in any format. Read abstracts, code books
