Born and raised in Notchy Creek, Tennessee, my love for the natural world and all life forms was instilled in me from a young age. That love has led me to major in Biology here at Roane State and will carry me to major in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at UTK. During my time here, I have taken a wide variety of courses and done well in them; I was even awarded the General Biology Award, the General Chemistry Award, and the Outstanding Freshman Award. My passion for academics is matched by my desire to help others, so drop by and discuss the beauty of mathematics and chemistry, the intricacies of literature and the humanities, or the story of life on earth. "Keep your eyes lifted and your head turning. The thirst for knowledge is in our genes; it was put there by our ancestors who spread across the world, and that thirst is never going to be quenched." - E.O. Wilson

I was born in Rochester, New York, grew up in Sarasota, Florida, went to college in Oberlin, Ohio, lived in New York City for fifteen years, and, finally moved home to the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. I have worked as a video technician for Sesame Street, as an off-off-Broadway theatrical producer, a secretary, a home health caregiver, a Sunday school teacher, a set designer, a private tutor, a waitress, an au pair, a substitute teacher in the South Bronx, a school van driver, a writer, and a video researcher. I still work sporadically as a glassblower; I have run my own business, Glass Cats Studios, for 25 years. And most recently, I have worked as a tutor at Roane State Community College (obviously the best job on this list!). In 2019 I began working on my master's degree, in Instructional Technology. If all goes well, I will complete it in the summer of 2021. I live in a large house near Walland with two sisters, a brother-in-law, a 12-year-old nephew, three cats, a dog, some tadpoles, and four fish.

Statistics

Hey! My name’s Sky and I’m an older student here at Roane State at a whopping twenty-seven years old. I took a little longer to decide what I wanted to do with my life, and I hope to get into the Radiology Program at Roane State next year. When I began the journey back to school after eight years, I was incredibly nervous. To be honest, I am neurodivergent, and I didn’t excel in school when I was younger. I was especially nervous about statistics because I was exceptionally bad at any math courses growing up (English was the only thing I was confident in). However, I've surprised myself upon returning to school. Whether it was age, or more determination to get my stuff together, I've found that I’m actually pretty good at school and have attained great study and learning tools. I even discovered that I’m good at statistics! With all that being said, I am excited to be working at the Learning Center as a statistics tutor so that I can do my best to bring confidence and understanding to other students who may be struggling with this course. I hope to help students surprise themselves and excel in a class that many people find difficult. I can’t wait to meet with you and see what we can accomplish together!
