News: Roane State community embraces season of giving in TBR's Annual Food Drive Challenge

Food collection on shelves

December 18, 2020

Roane State Community College earned bragging rights in this year’s College System of Tennessee Food Drive Challenge. But more importantly, students experiencing food insecurity are receiving the assistance they need thanks to the generosity of the campus community.

The Annual Food Drive Challenge was conceived by the College System’s Student Government Presidents’ Council 22 years ago as a project to help fellow students and others in their communities. All Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) institutions participating this year were grouped by student enrollment and sector to determine winners of the friendly competition that wrapped up December 8.

RSCC reported the most donations of any Tier 1 community college with approximately 6,979 items. Donations were primarily monetary and came from RSCC employees and members of the community. The gifts will help sustain the college’s food pantries into the new year.

Across the TBR system, participating colleges collected a total of 75,948 items, including $27,859 in monetary donations (each dollar counted as two items). The food is donated to campus food pantries, which are open to students in need, as well as local organizations, programs and food banks in the colleges’ broader communities.

Roane State continues to assist students with increased food insecurity issues during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even before the virus swept through the country, statistics showed that at least 40 percent of students in higher education had some form of food insecurity.

The college has made concerted efforts to address that problem, including significant in-house food pantries at Roane State’s three largest campuses – in Roane County, Cumberland County and Oak Ridge. Most recently, thanks to generous support from the East TN Foundation Neighbor to Neighbor grant and the CNS Y-12 Community Investment Fund, the college launched “Food Pantry On-the-Go” events to bring food and other supplies directly to students so they could stock up before the holidays.

All items from the college’s food pantries are free and available to students from any campus. For more information on this resource, visit roanestate.edu/foodpantry.

Donations to the Roane State Food Pantry are also appreciated year round. Tax deductible donations can be made directly to the Roane State Foundation online. To give, visit roanestate.edu/donate and indicate that your gift is for the food pantry.

The Roane State Foundation is a separate 501c3 corporation governed by an independent Board of Directors and established to provide financial support for Roane State students and programs. The Foundation seeks to enhance community awareness of the college, to secure private contributions and bequests, and to manage monies or properties given to the Foundation. Contributions to Roane State Foundation are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
