Grants

This page discusses the major grant programs that are available to you at Roane State. Each grant listed is the result of the calculation of need that is determined by completing the FAFSA.  (See the main Financial Aid page for instructions.)

Pell Grant

The largest and most common grant program from the federal government.

FSEOG

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is awarded to a limited number of students. In order to be considered, you must complete the FAFSA, submit it early, and have exceptional need based upon your EFC.

TSAA

The Tennessee Student Assistance Award is awarded to Tennessee residents with exceptional need on a first-come-first-served basis. In order to be considered for TSAA, students must complete the FAFSA, and submit it by the priority deadline, which is stated in the FAFSA booklet.

FWS

The Federal Work Study program is awarded to students who would like a part-time job at a RSCC site. If you are interested in applying for Federal Work Study, you need to go to the Financial Aid site and select the link for Federal Work-study/On Campus Employment. Students selected will be notified by their award letter.

ACG (Academic Competitiveness Grant)

An Academic Competitiveness Grant will provide up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year of undergraduate study to full-time students who are U.S. citizens, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and who had successfully completed a rigorous high school program, as determined by the state or local education agency and recognized by the Secretary of Education. Second year students must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0.  The Academic Competitiveness Grant is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.  If you are eligible for this grant and have submitted the FAFSA, the Financial Aid Office will receive confirmation based on the information submitted on the FAFSA.

National Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant

A National SMART Grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are U.S. citizens, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security.  The student must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major.  The National SMART Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.
