A program of study is a plan that students will develop, as soon as they enter high school, with help from teachers, parents and counselors. This plan will help students understand their interests, identify careers that fit those interests, and select courses that will lead to those careers. The program of study is a plan not only for high school, but for students’ career preparation beyond high school.
The goal of a program of study is to provide a guide for students that connects the classes they are taking today to the career they want tomorrow.
With over 700 different careers to choose from, it is often difficult for students to focus their varying interests. Dividing the job market into clusters should assist them in viewing future career possibilities more clearly. Career clusters are occupations that are grouped together because persons employed in these professions have been shown to share similar interests and strengths. Career clusters are shown on the next panel.
Dual studies courses are classes that allow students to earn high school credit and college credit at the same time. Several dual studies courses available at Roane State will fit into the programs of study that students choose.
ROANE STATE OPTIONS FOR PROGRAMS OF STUDY MAY INCLUDE:
Students who include dual studies courses, such as the criminal justice course offered at Greenback High School, into their Program of Study will not only fulfill their high school requirement, but earn college credit. Earning college credit while in high school helps families save on college costs. Plus, dual studies students get college-level training in their career interests.
