How do I get a classroom for my credit class?
Credit classes that appear in the schedule will be assigned an available classroom according to the size of the class. Rooms for classes will appear in your RaiderNet schedule as soon as they are assigned.

My credit classroom assignment changed/is not the one I requested. What happened?
The period extending from two weeks before classes begin until the second week of classes is our peak scheduling period.

We will not be able to reliably let you know about your semester’s classroom assignment SOONER than the peak scheduling period. We need information from all the divisions to be available at the same time before we can make assignments.

If you’ve checked your schedule before our peak scheduling period, your division may have assigned a “placeholder” room from a previous semester that does not reflect your actual assignment. If it’s earlier than two weeks before the first day of classes, your assignment hasn’t been finalized.

Some classes may grow in size and require a new room, or we may have new sections added late (even into the first week of classes) that will have to be given a room. We may need to move several classes to fit everyone in.

It’s always a good idea to re-check your RaiderNet schedule before going to your first class.

I would like specific equipment/a particular classroom. How can I request this?
Unless you let us know about specific needs, we’ll schedule your classroom based on the number of students only. We have an online form for scheduling rooms.  The form will give you the opportunity to specify classrooms or classroom equipment that you prefer.  When you use this form, you will receive a confirmation email that your room has been assigned.

  • Please use the online form. At Oak Ridge, classrooms are scheduled by Sandy Vann for ALL divisions and activities. The online form gives us all the information we need to reserve a room. This will help us process your request faster.  Due to the volume of requests year-round, we cannot process “walk-in” or emailed requests efficiently.
  • You may look your request up.  Credit classes will appear in your Raidernet account as soon as they are made, and extra activities will appear on the WebEvent calendar (click and scroll down to select Oak Ridge)You will receive an email letting you know the status of your request as soon as we are able to schedule it.  Should you have a deadline, please indicate this on the online form.
  • It will be difficult, if not impossible, to fulfill last-minute requests for rooms because we simply do not have enough space.
  • You will need to schedule your classroom or activity EACH SEMESTER – we cannot maintain standing orders for particular rooms or equipment because we have several hundred users with individual and changing needs.
  • Please request your room as soon as you know you need it.  Having your information early will help us plan ahead to get you the room you want and keep you informed if there are changes.

How do I know if I’ve gotten a classroom assigned for my credit class?
Final classroom assignments are generally posted about two weeks before the first day of classes. Rooms for classes will appear in your RaiderNet schedule as soon as they are assigned. Please note that classrooms may change as long as students are able to enroll.  It is a good idea to check again right before your first class.

If you would like to request a different room than the one you have assigned, please use the online form.

I have a room for my classes, but I need a room for another activity (study groups, make-up work, club meetings, guest speakers, or receptions).
“Extra” activities are for the one-time or short-term (less than a semester) use of a room.   It is important that we have your activity on our schedule. This will help us clear the building in the event of an emergency, contact students or faculty in the event of a personal emergency, avoid interruptions of your event by the cleaning staff, and preclude that room being used by another faculty member or event.

We have an online form for scheduling rooms. The conference room (A-108), Atrium and Visitor's Lobby can all be self-scheduled using Event Horizon.

You will receive an email confirming your reservation. Extra activities cannot be scheduled until credit classes have been assigned a classroom, and credit classes will have priority over other activities. If you request an extra activity to be scheduled during the period extending from two weeks before classes begin until the second week of classes, we will try to let you know about your assignment at least two working days before it is scheduled.

How can my students access the lab I teach in outside of class time?
Many of our labs have special equipment in them and are kept locked outside of class time for security reasons.  To allow your students access to any of the following labs, you will need to send a list of your students that need access during that semester (including the summer semester) to the Oak Ridge Frontline.  If students are not on the list, they will not be allowed to access those labs.

How do I let students know I am running late OR won’t be able to meet the class/keep office hours?

  1. Please let your division at the Roane County campus know if you are unable to meet your class for the whole or part of your class time. This will help them get quickly the information to your students and to us.  When the division notifies us, we will post a sign informing the students.

  2. Please give the following information for each class that you will miss/be late to:
    • Your name.
    • The complete course title with course and section number (CLASS 101 025).
    • The room number your class is meeting in (or your office number if this pertains to office hours)
    • What day (if other than "today") the class is held. If you are not meeting your class(es) for more than one day, please provide all necessary dates.
    • The time your class(es) meet(s).
If you are not meeting just one class OR you are not meeting any of your classes for a given day.
    • If you have a brief message for the students (for instance, to check Momentum for an assignment), that may be included on the posted sign.

How do I make arrangements for my guest lecturer or other special class event?
Please make sure the staff at the Oak Ridge Frontline know about special events your class is having, like a guest or substitute lecturer, an outing, or a library day. This will help us direct students who may have missed the announcement. We can also issue a temporary parking pass for guest speakers in advance and direct them to your classroom, office or lab when they arrive.

How do I get someone to give an exam in my absence?
Only faculty or testing center proctors can proctor exams for traditional classes. Please make arrangements with another faculty member or with the testing center if you wish to have a test proctored.

I do not have an office in Oak Ridge.  Where can I go between classes to meet students or check email?

Beginning FALL 2012, there will no longer be any assigned cubicles at Oak Ridge.  All cubicles in B-133 are permanent faculty offices.

  • If you need to check your email, there are open labs downstairs, C-112 and C-114.  There are also computer stations along the walls in the Visitor’s Lobby and Atrium areas.
  • WiFi is available throughout the building, so you are welcome to bring your laptop and use it as a portable office.  There is open seating in the Atrium, Visitor’s Lobby, Anderson’s Grill, Manly Art Gallery or Library.
  • You may self-schedule the conference room (A-108) by using Event HorizonPlease note that it is now the only conference room at the Oak Ridge Campus, so please cancel your event if you do not need the space.
  • The Library has study rooms available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that these areas are available on a temporary basis, they cannot be used for regular meetings.
  • You may not reserve classrooms for office hours.

Please make sure you are checking your RaiderNet messages and voicemails regularly, as we advise students to get in touch with you via voicemail or email.

How do I get a locker assignment at Oak Ridge?
Lockers are re-assigned each semester on a first-come, first-served basis.  One set of lockers are located near B-133, with another set upstairs in the H Faculty Wing.  You may request a locker from Mariella Akers

How do I get whiteboard markers for my classroom?
Housekeeping supplies markers to all the classrooms. You may obtain a marker from the faculty secretaries in B-116 OR from the receptionist at the switchboard. Black is the only color we stock.

If you cannot locate a staff member, you may contact Security at 2020 and they will get a marker for you.

If a marker in your classroom is dry, PLEASE throw it away. Otherwise Housekeeping will not know to resupply the classroom.

How do I get emergency assistance, equipment supplies, or training with the audio-visual or other instructional equipment in my classroom?
All requests for assistance with any instructional or office computers or equipment (other than IDEA Room – see below) go through the Help Desk.

Instructions for the classroom multimedia equipment may be found by clicking here and scrolling down to Oak Ridge Classroom Multimedia Instructions.

IDEA Room Equipment Assistance ONLY: dial extension 4673.

How do I sign out audio-visual or other instructional equipment?
If you need particular equipment for every class, please use the online form so we are aware of what you are requesting. The online room request form has check boxes to fill in for available equipment. Contact the Help Desk (Help@roanestate.edu or extension 4357) about getting your classroom set up with the equipment you need.

If you need equipment only for one class or a few classes, you can schedule your class as an extra activity in a classroom that has the proper equipment OR stop by the Oak Ridge Library to check out equipment on a daily basis.  Currently, the Oak Ridge Library has the following available:

  • 2 televisions with DVD/VCR
  • 1 television with Beta video player
  • 1 large-screen television with DVD/VCR
  • 2 multimedia projectors
  • 1 laptop (to be used with the multimedia projectors)
  • 2 overhead projectors
  • 2 large cassette/CD/radio players
  • 1 small cassette player/recorder
  • 1 slide projector
  • 5 slide carousels
  • 1 video camera (requires video tape)
  • 1 tripod for video camera

If you need training or set-up assistance, you must contact the Help Desk (Help@roanestate.edu or extension 4357).  The Library is not able to provide technical assistance.

How do I get supplies for my office?
Classroom and office supplies (including letterhead) are available by request from your division in Harriman. With your division’s permission, you may also purchase items from the Bookstore.

How do I get letterhead stationary or envelopes?
We encourage faculty to download and use the Oak Ridge letterhead templates. You may also order letterhead from your division in Harriman.

How do I make copies?
You’ll need your copier account number. You may contact the secretaries in B-116 or your division/program to get this number. Click here for basic instructions on using both sets of copiers (upstairs Kyoceras and downstairs Panasonics).  You may also ask the secretaries in B-116 for assistance.

COLOR copies may be obtained through your division. Send or email your division secretary the item(s) you need copied or printed. Oak Ridge presently has no provision for color copies or print-outs.

How do I get something scanned?

All four faculty copiers on the Oak Ridge campus are able to scan.  The copiers will send the scanned document to your email as an attachment.  The default format is a .PDF, but you may choose other formats from the scanning menu (you may also use the Help button). Please note:  You may scan in color, but you cannot PRINT or COPY in color.

You will use the Send button for all scanning on the four faculty copiers.  The Address Book button you want is at the upper left of the screen (not the Address Book button at the right of the screen).  It has two options, Address Book and Ext Address Book.  The Address Book option shows contacts on the local machine in front of you.  The Ext Address Book option shows RSCC employees.  To put your name “on the machine” so you don’t have to search it each time, you must add it to the Address Book from the Ext Address Book.   (You do not have to do this just to send a scan to someone.)

To find someone's name in the Ext Address Book:

  1. Press the Search button (to the middle right of the screen).
  2. At the upper left of the screen, press the Address Book button to get a pull-down menu.
  3. Select Ext Address Book (external in this case just means not on that particular machine, not outside RSCC).
  4. Press the Search button to the right of the screen.
  5. The leftmost top button will give you options to search on (full name, username, email address).
  6. Enter your search word in the appropriate box(es).
  7. Check the box to the right of the desired name.
  8. Press the “Next” button at the lower right of the screen.

To add your name to the local Address Book on the copier:

  1. Follow the search steps above to find and select your name.
  2. At the lower right of the screen, you will press a button that says Add to Machine Address Book.
  3. Press the Next button at the lower right of the screen.
  4. This will take you to a screen that will ask you if you want to Add (default) or Replace the name.  If you are replacing an entry (for instance, your name changed or you made a typo when manually adding a name) pressing the replace option will take you to a screen where you will choose which address you are replacing.
  5. Press the Save button at the lower right of the screen.
  6. Press Yes in the pop-up prompt.
  7. Repeat each copier you want your name to appear on.

Can’t find your name after you added it?  Make sure Address Book (not Ext Address Book) is the option selected at the top left of the screen.

How do I get something typed and/or copied, or other clerical work done?
Work order forms are available. Please fill the form out completely so that we don’t have to hold your job up waiting for clarification. If the item is not an exam, please place the work in the work order basket at the front of B-116.  If the item IS an exam, put ONLY the work order form in the basket and give the exam to one of the secretaries.

PLEASE NOTE:  We have had a permanent reduction in the secretarial staff at Oak Ridge, and the SAS work study student workforce has been phased out.  Please take this into account when submitting work orders.  We will try to complete copying in at least two working days if possible, but typing or other work requests should be submitted a week in advance.

Completed non-exam work will be available for pick-up in B-116 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. each day, unless you have asked that it be placed in your mailbox by checking the appropriate box on the work order form.

Completed exams are kept locked up in B-116. They will be available for pick-up in B-116 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. each day. You may also request to have an exam wrapped and delivered to your mailbox by checking the appropriate box on the work order form.

We do not have enough in our budget to cover labels, envelopes, transparencies, colored paper/cardstock, or other special items your work order might need. Please requisition these supplies from your division and attach them to your work order request to avoid any delays.
