News: Sports rewind: Raiders start week with big win

Cedric Clinkscales

Sports rewind is a look back at recent results for Roane State’s men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Roane State men

The Raiders (7-3) started the week with a strong 98-91 win over Gadsden State on Monday, Nov. 28. Sophomore forwards Cedric Clinkscales and Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard each scored 23 points.

Roane State trailed by 10 at the half against Columbia State on Friday, Dec. 2, but the Raiders rallied in the second half. The comeback fell short, however, in the 59-56 loss.

Conference front-runner Jackson State dropped the Raiders 84-67 on Saturday, Dec. 3. Roane State was 2-of-19 from 3-point range, and the lack of outside shooting hurt the Raiders.

“Overall, our play was stronger on Saturday,” head coach Randy Nesbit said. “But we were up against an outstanding team and were not able to generate a sufficient offense.”

Roane State women

Jill Herman (28 points) led Roane State (5-5) in a 95-68 win over Gadsden State on Monday, Nov. 28. Takyah Gilmore (20 points), Shannon Parks (15 points), Amiee Phillips (10 points) and Tashia Biggs (10 points) also scored in double-figures. Kayla Kimes added nine assists and four steals.

Roane State shot an incredible 62 percent from the field in the second half, including 5-of-5 from 3-point range.

The Raiderettes fell to Columbia State 78-62 on Friday, Dec. 2. Gilmore had 22 points, and Herman added 12. Biggs scored 10 points, and Kimes tallied 13 assists.

Roane State bounced back on Saturday, Dec. 3 with a 73-50 win over Jackson State. Herman scored 22 points, and Parks added 15. Kimes had five assists and five steals, and Kayla Gibson contributed seven points and eight rebounds.

Roane State’s defense limited Jackson State to 29.9 percent shooting and forced 21 turnovers.
