News: Sports rewind: Clinkscales leads big win over first-place Jackson St.

Cedric Clinkscales

Sports rewind is a look back at recent results for Roane State’s men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Roane State men

After having their nine-game home winning streak snapped Feb. 3 in a 72-59 loss to Columbia State, the Raiders (17-6, 9-4) rebounded by crushing first-place Jackson State 81-43 on Feb. 4.

“It is hard to explain how we could dismantle such a strong team in our league,” head coach Randy Nesbit said. “But it certainly speaks well of our team’s character as we were very, very disappointed with our Friday night loss.”

The Raiders jumped out to a 19-3 advantage over Jackson State and never looked back. They shot a scorching 50 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent on two-point attempts. Sophomore forward Cedric Clinkscales scored 17 points and snatched 13 rebounds, while Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard had 17 points and nine rebounds. Jonathon Maybank was 9-of-16 from the field and scored 20 points. Freshman guard Cameron Porter chipped in 10.

Gadsden-Gillard had 13 points and 11 rebounds in the loss to Columbia State. Troy Burriss scored 13 points, and Clinkscales had 11.

Roane State women

The Raiderettes (13-11) lost a heartbreaker to Columbia State before rebounding with a victory over Jackson State.

Jill Herman scored 28 points in the 78-77 loss to Columbia State on Feb. 3. Kayla Gibson had a double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds), and Takyah Gilmore added 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Raiderettes came back from the close loss and defeated Jackson State 74-65 on Feb. 4. Gibson posted another double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds), and Shynika Batista added 11 points. Tashia Biggs and Shannon Parks had 10 points each.
