News: Sports rewind: Raiders split road thrillers

Sports rewind is a look back at recent results for Roane State’s men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Roane State men

The Raiders (19-7, 10-5 in conference) split two close road games.

Roane State defeated Volunteer State 72-71 on Feb. 10. Sophomore Jon Maybank hit a huge 3-point shot with a minute to play,  and the Raiders prevented Volunteer State from getting off a good shot at the buzzer. Freshman guard Troy Burriss poured in a career-high 21 points. Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard, playing with a pulled hamstring, tallied 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Roane State fell to Motlow State 64-61 on Feb. 11. Sophomore Cedric Clinkscales scored eight points in the last five minutes to help cut an eight-point Motlow State lead to just one in the waning seconds. Motlow State managed to hold off Roane State and preserve the win. Maybank scored 17 points, and Clinkscales added 13.

The Raiders dropped visiting Maryville College 74-52 on Feb. 7. Forward Kevin Altidor scored a team-high 19 points. Maybank and freshman Cameron Porter contributed 17 points apiece. Porter hit five shots from 3-point range.

Roane State women

The Raiderettes (13-13) fell to Motlow State 67-54 on Feb. 11. Jill Herman led Roane State with 26 points and nine rebounds. Amiee Phillips contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.

Herman had a team-high 15 points in a 81-53 loss to Volunteer State on Feb. 10. Shynika Batista added 12 points.
