News: Event gives middle school students taste of college life

Nursing lab assistant Susan Gross leads fascinated eighth-graders on a tour of
Roane State’s nursing lab at the college’s Oak Ridge campus.

Eighth-graders from Coalfield School and Petros-Joyner School in Morgan County got a taste of what it’s like to be a college student during a daylong visit to Roane State Community College’s Oak Ridge campus.

The “College Student for a Day” event on March 7 involved 70 students. They participated in an orientation session, class rotations and a variety of hands-on activities that highlighted college programs.

“The earlier students begin thinking about life after high school, the better,” said Glenda Walls, Roane State student enrollment counselor. “The event helped introduce students to college life and get them excited about their education and future after high school.”

Students visited a nursing lab and learned about what nurses do, additional careers in healthcare and the education required for those careers. During a session in a computer classroom, the students explored computer art and design and created their own artwork.

The students also participated in a fun Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) activity. Using equipment in a Roane State science lab, the students analyzed fingerprints and fibers to identify who kidnapped a movie star. Another session helped students discover their personality types and potential career options that best relate to them.

“We had a fun day,” Walls said. “The students got a feel for what makes college different from high school and perhaps could see themselves as college students one day.”

Walls works with area middle schools to help get students excited about college. Schools interesting in contacting Walls can reach her at wallsgs@roanestate.edu or (865) 882-4555.
