Roane State music students Emilee Richardson, left and Rebecca Staton were honored at a recent regional solo vocal competition hosted by the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
Roane State Community College music students Rebecca Staton of Harriman and Emilee Richardson of Kingston earned honors at a regional solo vocal competition that included performers from four-year universities.
The National Association of Teachers of Singing hosted the March 9-10 competition at Murray State University in Kentucky. Staton placed third in the Underclass Musical Theater category, while Richardson placed second in Senior Women. Staton and Richardson are members of the college’s Celebration Singers.
“Our students competed against singers from several large schools in the area, including Tennessee and Vanderbilt,” Roane State choral director Brenda Luggie said. “We’re thrilled that Rebecca and Emilee were recognized for their outstanding performances.”
The two-day, three-round competition included specific repertoire guidelines and divided students into categories based on age and semesters studied in voice. Staton and Richardson received certificates and cash awards.
Luggie and Roane State adjunct faculty member Slade Trammell accompanied the students. Trammell played piano for the students during the competition.
