News: Roane State communications students develop TV show "Scenic Backroads"

Roane State students Stephanie Briley, left, and Kathleen Duff pause while shooting video for a story on antique shopping in Harriman. The story is one of many featured on the new Channel 15 show “Scenic Backroads,” a program developed, written and produced by Roane State communications students.

Roane State Community College communications students have produced a new show for Channel 15 that introduces viewers to fun, unique and interesting people and places in and around Roane County.

The students develop, write and produce the program, titled “Scenic Backroads.” The show airs every Saturday at 7 p.m. on Channel 15 and is also available on the station’s website, www.tv15.org; YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/roanestate15; and Facebook page, www.facebook.com/roanestate15.

Channel 15 is a non-commercial government and education television channel available on Comcast Channel 15 in Roane County. It’s owned by the City of Harriman and operated by Roane State. The station provides students with hands-on education in communications.

“Scenic Backroads” involves students enrolled in COMM 2070 (Special Topics in Camera Production) and COMM 2100 (Television Studio Production I). For each episode, students divide into teams to cover at least five topics.

Each team has a lead reporter and at least one camera operator. Additionally, two or three students are assigned on-set hosting duties for each episode. Jobs are rotated with each episode so that each student can gain practical experience.

Topics include Fort Southwest Point, a visit to the Pinkston Mule Farm, a look inside the renovated courtroom at the old Roane County Courthouse, what’s going on at Live & Let Live Drugstore, disc golf at Roane County Park, a behind-the-scenes look at Harriman’s noon whistle and a feature on the local music scene.

Participating students are Stephanie Briley of Rockwood, Kathleen Duff of Harriman, David McCarthy of Harriman, Lang Montierth of Rockwood, Fuzzy Orange of Sunbright, Miki Parsons of Crossville, Corey Reed of Harriman, Dylan Russell of Kingston and Katie Schillinger of Crossville.
