Medical Scribe: A Medical Scribe works alongside the physician in a medical office or hospital setting assisting with the documentation aspect of the patient care. Medical scribes document the verbal communication between the patient and physician and provide real-time transcription of physician notes.  They may also perform other related tasks such as the retrieval of medical test results and scheduling medical tests and procedures, etc.

Class Location

Medical Scribe courses are delivered in a combination of web, hybrid, and traditional classroom. Traditional classes are at the Oak Ridge Campus.

Length of Time to Complete the Medical Scribe Courses

Classes may be completed in 4 months (one semester) after completion of any learning support classes (longer if necessary)

Medical Scribe Pre-Requisites

  1. Compass test. Applicants are exempt from taking the Compass test if one of the following conditions are met:
    • Students who have prior college-level English courses may be exempt from the Compass test.
    • Students having an Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college are exempt.
      * If the Compass test identifies deficiencies in reading or writing, the appropriate learning support courses must be completed prior to enrolling in medical scribe courses.  Learning support courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.
  2. Minimum keyboarding speed of 45 words per minute.

Enrollment is on a space available basis, if course prerequisites are met.

Prepare for the Future

It is anticipated that the implementation of the Affordable Care Act will increase patient access to healthcare delivery systems.  An influx of patients into existing healthcare delivery systems coupled with an increasing demand for more comprehensive medical documentation in an electronic medical record (EMR) environment will increase the need for healthcare support workers such as Medical Scribes.

Employment Opportunities

Medical Scribes are typically employed in physician’s offices and hospitals.
