Dual credit is credit by assessment. This is not the same as dual enrollment. Under dual credit, you take a high school course and if you successfully pass an end-of-course assessment administered by the college, a pass/fail grade will be awarded to you, but it will likely not transfer to other institutions. However, if you plan to attend Roane State, the course credit will be applied to your transcript. During the school year, the high school instructor incorporates college competencies into the secondary curriculum. Contact the Dual Studies Office at (865) 882-4504 for more course specific questions.
At mid-term, your high school instructor contacts the Coordinator of Dual Studies to report student interest in taking the end-of-course assessment. You will complete the dual credit application to be distributed by a high school instructor or accessed on the dual studies Web site. You must have a teacher recommendation signature on the application. A non-refundable payment is due upon submission of the application. The assessment fee is based on $20 per credit hour, i.e., a three-hour credit course assessment fee is $60. Student applications along with the assessment fee will be due to the RSCC Business Office by the end of October for fall term and the end of March for spring term.
Applications with payment may be submitted in the following ways: 1) Payment may be made in cash by bringing a completed application to any RSCC business office. 2) Completed application and check may be mailed to Roane State Community College, Business Office, 276 Patton Lane, Harriman TN 37748. 3) Completed application may be faxed to (865) 882-4662 and for security purposes, credit card information will be solicited by the Business Office upon receipt. RSCC accepts Visa, MasterCard or American Express.
During the first week of December, for students enrolled in fall, or the first week of May for students enrolled in spring, the high school instructor contacts Coordinator of Dual Studies to schedule group assessments to be administered at the Roane State campus. Individual assessments may be scheduled by calling the Testing Center at (865) 882-4661.
Students scheduled for the assessment should arrive at the Testing Center early and submit a photo ID. The Testing Center staff will attach the dual credit application to your completed assessment and forward it to the appropriate division for grading. The Records Office will record the grade in escrow and notify you of the pass/fail status of the exam.
You will receive the credit hours for courses passed upon admission to Roane State after high school graduation. Contact the Admissions and Records Office to confirm credit is transferred into the college computer system.
