Harriman resident Blake Kirkland will donate a sketch of classic Hollywood actress and Harriman native Dixie Lee to the Princess Theatre in a brief ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
The program will begin at 9 a.m. at the Princess, 421 North Roane St. in downtown Harriman. Light refreshments will follow the program, and Roane State assistant professor John Brown, author of “Harriman: Images of America,” will sign copies of his book.
The public is invited.
“The picture is a hand-drawn sketch by a local artist named Amber Patty,” Kirkland said. “I would like to present this to the Princess and the people of Harriman in remembrance of Dixie Lee. I feel the people of Harriman would enjoy learning about her and how a small-town girl made it all the way to a silver screen star.”
Lee was born Wilma Winifred Wyatt in 1911 in Harriman. According to Kirkland, Lee’s family moved when she was young.
Lee went on to Hollywood and is perhaps best known for her role in “Love in Bloom” with George Burns and Gracie Allen.
Lee was married to Bing Crosby, and they had four children. She died in 1952 at age 40.
