News: Roane State celebrates Black History Month


The WordPlayers perform a scene from “Walk, Don’t Ride!” a touring show that will visit Roane State,

 

Roane State will host a traveling play about the Civil Rights Movement and show the movie “Glory” at the Princess Theatre as part of the college’s Black History Month celebration.

March 3, main campus, Harriman

The WordPlayers, in collaboration with The Carpetbag Theatre, will present “Walk, Don’t Ride!” in the O’Brien Theatre on the main campus in Harriman on Tuesday, March 3 at 12:30 p.m. The performance is free, and no reservations are required.

 “Walk, Don't Ride!” by Peter Manos is a presentation of drama and song depicting events that helped shape American freedom. The play includes the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Nashville Lunch Counter Sit-in, and the Greyhound/Trailways Freedom Rides.

March 4, Princess Theatre, downtown Harriman: Watch movie Glory

Roane State’s Arts and Lectures Committee will screen the Civil War movie “Glory” at the Princess Theatre in downtown Harriman on Wednesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Donations are requested to support future Arts and Lectures events. 

“Glory” stars Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and Cary Elwes. The film tells the story of the Civil War's first all-black volunteer company. Please note the movie is rated R for violence and strong language.
