Title:  Kinetics

Time Estimate:  3:00 hrs

Equipment Needed:

Spec 301 and 401 - in Harriman there is one 501 that might be working.
Test tubes
Cuvetts
10 mL graduated cylinders

Chemicals Needed:

red food coloring - 8 drops/500mL water
bleach - Clorox - careful not to buy "color fast"

Special Precautions:

Suggested Instructions:

Increase the test time from 2-3 minutes to 10-15 minutes
The dilutions which are needed are around 100 or 1000:1 in water:bleach.
This varies depending on the mixing of the dyes and the strength
of the bleach.  at about 10,000:1 it is likely that one will
become limited by the amount of bleach, which means that the
initial scoping is important.  Tell them to make big steps in the initial evaluations and not something like:  1:1 the 2:1 then 3:1 etc.

Go over the change-over from the rate expressions to the integrated rate equation.  Some have had calculus but others have to take your word for it.

Go over graphing of C vs. t, lnC vs. t and 1/C vs t.  Emphasize that it is the best fit to the straight line which is the decision maker.
