The designation of "s", "p","d" and "f" can be gleaned from the periodic table.

In your lab manual is a periodic table (page ix) with these designations present.  To find out how many electrons are present in each subsidiary level simply count up to the atom required.  The principal quantum numbers for the s and p electrons is the same as the period (i.e. row) number.  For the d electrons the principal quantum number is the (period number -1) .  For the f electrons it is (period number - 2)
