Service Learning Quilt Project

  • This is a service learning project for students in MATH 1420 Problem Solving and Geometry at the Cumberland County Higher Education Center of Roane State Community College.

  • Students work individually to design a quilt top.

  • Each student must use at least 10 different shapes in his/her design.

  • The quilt must tell a story,  It can be based on a children's story, poem, song, or nursery rhyme

  •  The quilt must be donated to a community program. This year they were donated to the B4Books.

  • This year many of the students included a summary of the story their quilt told or donated the book that the quilt represented.

  • Each student had to do a very involved paper over the 10 different shapes they used in their quilt design.

  • Each student had to write a refection paper on the project.

  • Each student had to brief presentation when the quilts were presented to the B4Books Program.

B4Books

"B4Books is a program of Neighbors Together and other community organizations and volunteers wanting the best for all Cumberland County children." In celebration of the birth a baby to WIC-eligible moms and dads, a free leaning kit is given to the parents.  This kit includes a handmade baby quilt, a Mother Goose book, a baby rattle, a baby's first cloth book and a cloth tote bag.  B4Books goes through the kit with the parents to give them ideas on what they can do today to help their child learn from the start.  Parents must enroll their baby in B4Books before his/her second month.  "B4Books  babies receive four different kits through their first year."
