Financial Aid
  • Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

According to Federal Regulations, a student:

  • must have a cumulative Roane State Community College GPA of 2.0;
  • must complete 67% of hours paid.  Only grades of A, B, C, D are eligible
  • may receive financial aid for up to 90 attempted* college credit hours if working towards an associate degree
  • may receive financial aid for 150% of attempted* hours required to complete your certificate program

*Includes all hours from Roane State or any other college/university attended even if you did not receive financial aid for these courses

Any student that does not meet the above criteria will be placed on financial aid suspension.  If on financial aid suspension, a student may attend Roane State at his or her own expense.  No federal or state awards (including student loans) may be received during this time.

Low GPA or Failure to Complete Hours Appeal Process

  • Students may submit the appeal form with documentation to the Financial Aid Office. Appeal forms will not be considered without documentation.
  • Only appeals with proof of extenuating circumstances will be considered. Extenuating circumstances are circumstances that are beyond your control (ex. death in the family, serious illness, etc.)
  • All decisions will be made by the Financial Aid Committee

Maximum Hours Appeal Process

  1. Students will need to complete a degree evaluation through RaiderNet or meet with their Faculty Advisor or the Advising Resource Center to develop an academic plan for graduation/transfer.  The plan should include:
    • courses that fulfill your degree requirements
    • semester-by-semester listing of the courses you plan to take to achieve graduation from RSCC.
  2. Complete the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Appeal Form.
  3. Attach proof of extenuating circumstances to the SAP Appeal Form.

    Proof can be:
    1. a letter from the student
    2. documentation of health issues or doctor’s statement
    3. legal documents
    4. job termination papers, etc.

Examples of extenuating circumstances are:

    1. Serious illness of the student or immediate family member
    2. Retraining due to job loss, medical issues, skills or occupation upgrade
    3. Working toward a second degree
    4. Other circumstances as documented
  1. Students officially accepted into Allied Health Science/Nursing programs should also submit a copy of their acceptance letter.
  2. The completed appeal form that has been signed by an advisor and supporting documentation should be returned to the Financial Aid Office.

The appeal will be reviewed looking only at hours attempted toward your current major.

*Includes all hours from Roane State or any other college/university attended, even if you did not receive financial aid for these courses that apply towards your current degree or certificate.

**Please be advised that if a student has been approved for a Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal (SAP) and does a total withdrawal, officially or unofficially, the appeal becomes null and void.
