Banned Books Week 2008 Writing Contest

DeVan Burton won the 2008 contest with his essay on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Read DeVan's essay. Congratulations to all participants.

The Roane State Libraries and Learning Center sponsored this essay contest in observance of Banned Books Week.

There were two options:

In a personal essay of between 350 and 500 words, address the topic of Freedom to Read.  You might tell a story about your own experience reading a controversial book or about your reaction to book challenges in your school or community.

or

In a essay of between 350 and 500 words, react to the following: "If we do not believe in freedom of speech for those we despise, we do not believe in it at all." (Noam Chomsky)

A book from the American Library Association's list of frequently challenged books will be donated to Roane State library in honor of DeVan Burton.
