A course designed for students who score below 18 on the ACT English subsection or below 77 on the COMPASS writing subsection. The course follows the emporium model with students meeting for designated class time in a computer lab where they can work through materials in Pearson's My Writing Lab with the assistance of the instructor. Students are also expected to work independently on the course materials outside of class. In addition to the course materials in My Writing Lab, students must complete five essays in consultation with the instructor and tutors in the learning centers. Class time, as necessary, is set aside for discussion and small group work. A minimum standard to pass the course is successful completion of three of the five essays (C or higher), along with mastery of corequisite work in My Writing Lab. Students are encouraged to complete both competencies in a single semester.
