Pre Engineering at RSCC

Are you the type of person who wants to be able to have an interesting and
enjoyable job helping to meet the needs of people in society.  Would you like to
know that your college education will provide you with the widest range of
opportunities, excellent pay, and very little possibility of becoming obsolete
or needing to start over.  Then engineering is for you.

The Pre Engineering courses at Roane State have been being taught since Roane
State was created in 1971.  Hundreds of former Roane State pre engineering
students now work as engineers helping to meet society's needs using the
knowledge and skills they first learned at Roane State. They tell us that they
were very well prepared to transfer to other Colleges and Universities where
they added the specialty courses of their own personal areas of interest and
received Bachelors Degrees in their chosen engineering area.  Many have also
gone to graduate schools and completed Masters and Doctorates.

The college preparatory courses in high school are considered to be the best
preparation for going to college because they allow the student who takes them
to choose any area of college study without having to spend extra time learning
the basic communication, mathematics, and science needed before doing the
college level work in the area they choose.  In the same way, an engineering
education prepares people for the broadest possible opportunities for
employment.  Business, industry, and government organizations vigorously recruit
engineering graduates to work as engineers, technical managers, computer systems
designers and administrators, teachers and training planners and coordinators,
researchers, systems analysts, product development and designers, etceteras.
Engineering is also recognized as excellent preparation for medical schools and
law schools.  Engineering graduates are also recruited by Graduate Schools of
Business, Sciences, Mathematics, etceteras.  All types of employers recognize
that people with an engineering degree can quickly teach themselves whatever
they need to know to help the organization solve problems.  Since the ability to
create teams of problem solvers is critical to any employer's success they
recognize the need to hire engineers even if their business does not
specifically require engineers.  In this information age of world wide web
computer based businesses and organizations, the need for people with the highly
versatile and flexible education of engineering is increasing almost as rapidly
as the use of the internet.

Engineering is the use of mathematics and science to help meet the needs of
society.  It typically takes four to six years after completing high school to
complete the education needed to be able to do engineering work.  The four major
types of engineering are Chemical, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical
Engineering.  Many other types such as Aerospace, Agricultural ,Biomedical,
Environmental, Industrial, Nuclear, are specialties within the major types or
some combination of the major types.  All types of engineering require a core
set of communication, teamwork, and problem solving skills which are taught
primarily in the first two to three years of college.  Students that already
have acquired some of these skills while they were in high school usually need
two or less years of pre engineering college courses.  These courses can all be
taken at Roane State community college before transferring to a chosen
university or college which offers the desired engineering specialty program.
Students that did not take college preparatory math and science in high school
or do not remember what they learned usually need to take such courses as
algebra, geometry, and trigonometry before taking the core pre engineering
courses.  These preparatory courses can be taken at Roane State and result in a
student needing additional time to complete their pre engineering work.

Any student regardless of their previous preparation can complete an engineering
education.  You need to be willing to do the study and homework required and to
continuously ask for the help you need to learn the needed communication,
teamwork, and problem solving skills which will make you able to use mathematics
and science to help meet the needs of society.  Engineering students typically
range from people that need to learn or remember some of the basic
communication, math, and science that is contained in high school college
preparatory courses to those that have advanced placement college credit for
work done while in high school who get to know each other and work together to
learn engineering.

Unlike many other professions the Engineering profession does not limit the
number of people that are allowed to enter into engineering education.  Anyone
that is admitted to college is immediately allowed to enroll in any engineering
courses for which they have the needed preparation.  If you are currently being
kept out of some program by this quota process, it would be a great idea to get
an engineering education and use it to go into your desired field of work.

Students that have completed the pre engineering courses and obtained an
Associates degree from Roane State are already qualified continue their college
education at a University or College or to work as Engineering Aides, Scientific
Technicians, and Technical Assistants as well as many other positions requiring
the ability to used math and science to help solve problems.

Engineering can be your doorway to the future that you want for yourself and
family.  Why not begin today?
