Course Series: Mammography

The Radiologic Technology Program at RSCC offers mammography courses for registered radiologic technologists. These courses are intended for technologists who want to update and improve their job skills, want help preparing for the ARRT Mammography Registry Exam, or just want to learn more about mammography. Didactic courses are offered in Fall and Spring. Technologists who do not have access to mammography clinical experience can also sign up for clinical courses. Classes for Roane State’s mammography courses are held in the evening at the Oak Ridge Branch campus.

Didactic Courses

MAM 110, Principles of Mammography, Credits: 3
This course covers the basic principles of anatomy, physiology, and pathology as well as positioning and procedures. Other topics include patient interactions and management, equipment operation, and quality assurance. 3 lecture hours/week.
Not part of a TN Transfer Pathway.

Clinical Courses

MAM 115, Clinical Practicum I, Credits: 2
This course is designed for students to participate in mammography radiographic examinations under approved supervision in the clinical setting. Students will obtain experience concerning the proper use of radiographic equipment, along with the development of skills in positioning, patient care, image analysis, and radiation safety practices. Students must complete and document a minimum of 75 mammographic examinations (screening and/or diagnostic) in addition to the 25 examinations that are required by the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA). 240 total clinical hours (Co-requisite: MAM 110).
Not part of a TN Transfer Pathway.

Clinical Education courses are intended for technologists who do not have access to mammography experience through their employers. Technologists taking these courses will be assigned to an RSCC approved site for the semester of their clinical rotation (16 hours per week). No more than ten mammography students will be admitted to each Clinical Education course. Clinical sites will be chosen in consultation with RSCC Radiologic Technology faculty. RSCC will make a reasonable effort to assign mammography students to their preferred RSCC approved sites, but this is not always possible.

Admission Requirements

Note: These courses are not part of a TBR-approved degree or Certificate program and therefore, are not eligible for federal financial aid.
