Roane State Community College has launched a new program that includes extensive instruction in computer programming and prepares students for valuable tech industry certifications.

Classes for the new Associate of Applied Science in Computer Information Technology begin this fall. Nearly all of the program’s courses can be taken online.

“We are very excited about the computer information technology program,” program director Dr. George Meghabghab said. “Our curriculum is closely aligned with the skills tech companies want in their employees.”

Students will learn to develop applications, design and query databases, maintain and secure networks and more. Course subjects include HTML and CSS, programming, database concepts, JavaScript, and network routing.

Roane State’s computer science faculty include Dr. Meghabghab, who holds a Ph.D. in computer science; Michael Chung, who has a master’s in nuclear engineering; and Steven Zhang, who has a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering.

“Students really get the best of both worlds at Roane State,” Dr. Meghabghab said. “Our classes are small, which is a great benefit in a field such as computer science, and they are taught by experts in the field.”

Courses will prepare students to earn industry certifications valued by tech employers. For example, students can earn certifications in OCA Java, Network+, and OCA SQL 12g.

“The ability for students to earn these certifications as part of the program is a great benefit,” Dr. Meghabghab said. “These are credentials that employers are looking for.”

The program also includes a paid internship. The internships will give students hands-on experience and teach them to work in teams to solve real-world business problems.

Fall classes begin Aug. 22.
