Sept. 9, 2016

Roane State Community College emergency medical technician student Zachary Kennedy of Andersonville has received the 2016 Colton Stout Memorial Scholarship.

Kennedy, a firefighter with the Andersonville Volunteer Fire Department and a certified nursing assistant at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, is studying EMT this fall. He plans to complete advanced EMT training in the spring and then enroll in the college’s paramedic program.

Kennedy said his long-term goal is to become a critical care paramedic and work for UT Lifestar. The $1,500 annual scholarship, Kennedy said, has provided needed assistance with the cost of his education.

“The scholarship definitely helps,” Kennedy said. “It has lifted a financial burden and paid for all of the books and the equipment that I have to have.”

Tracy Stout-Powers established the scholarship in memory of her son, Colton. The scholarship supports students pursuing careers in emergency medicine.

Colton, an EMT-IV and firefighter, died in a January 2014 car accident. He served with Campbell County EMS, the Anderson County Rescue Squad and the Marlow Volunteer Fire Department.

“He was all about helping people,” Stout-Powers said.

Daniel Adams with the Clinton Fire Department was the first recipient of the scholarship.

The Roane State Foundation was founded in 1979 as a separate not-for-profit entity with the purpose of providing financial support for Roane State students and programs.
