News: Roane State’s Anderson appointed to state board

Nov. 14, 2016

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam has appointed longtime Roane State educator Andy Anderson to the state’s 10-member Board of Examiners of Psychology.

“In the thorough, aggressive search for candidates, your individual characteristics and professional qualifications were exceptional among the number of nominees who expressed interest,” Haslam’s letter to Anderson states.

“I was shocked that I got appointed,” said Anderson, an associate professor who teaches at Roane State’s W.H. Swain Scott County Center. “I really do consider it an honor.”

Anderson is one of the two members of college psychology faculties in Tennessee’s colleges and universities appointed to the state board. He will serve a five-year term.

The board meets quarterly in Nashville. It approves issuing new state psychology licenses, investigates alleged infractions or unethical behavior and determines sanctions, and suggests changes to state guidelines about standards for practicing psychologists.

“We’re responsible for making decisions about other people’s livelihoods,” Anderson said.

He has been with Roane State since 1996 and has taught at the Scott County campus since 2007. Anderson teaches seven psychology classes each semester, including three dual enrollment courses for high school students seeking college credits.

A broad cross-section of students takes his classes, which he says are required for some medical fields of study.

Roane State has a “state of the art facility” in Huntsville, Anderson said, and about 400 students take classes on that campus. “I’m very impressed with what they’ve done here,” he said, adding that he's grateful for the opportunity Roane State has afforded him.
