Students who complete Roane State’s associate of applied science in geographic information systems (GIS) can now transfer their credits toward a bachelor’s degree from Marshall University.

The 2+2 transfer arrangement allows students to take their first two years at Roane State and earn an associate of applied science in GIS. Then, students can transfer directly into Marshall University’s fully online bachelor’s degree program in geography.

“We are very excited about this arrangement with Marshall University,” said Pat Wurth, director of Roane State’s GIS program. “Students can benefit from the skills they learn in our program, and have a clear pathway to a bachelor’s degree in their field.”

Marshall’s fully online program includes courses in GIS, global environmental issues, meteorology, world regions and human geography.

“The Marshall University Geography Department is proud to partner with Roane State to provide a pathway for students to complete a bachelor's degree entirely online in geography at Marshall after completion of their associate's degree from Roane State,” said Dr. James Leonard, chairman of the Geography Department at Marshall University, which is located in Huntington, W.Va.

To learn more about Roane State’s GIS program, contact Wurth at wurthpa@roanestate.edu or (865) 354-3000 ext. 2275. The program is a designated Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) in Geospatial Sciences.

Organized by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, in partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey, the CAE GS program is a new endeavor designed to cultivate centers of academic excellence in geospatial sciences such as GIS.
