COLS 1010 & Reinvigorating Service-Learning

The COLS 1010 Director and Service Learning Coordinator will recruit and coordinate with nonprofit organizations and agencies in various fields of service from all nine counties in RSCC’s service area to provide service learning opportunities for students, particularly those in COLS 1010, which will be required for all first-year students in Fall 2017, as well as SERV 1010 and SERVE 1020, and any other RSCC course utilizing a service learning component. COLS 1010 will require all students to complete eight hours of volunteer service that is related to their career interest of choice. One of the primary goals of COLS 1010 is to help students develop appropriate career pathways in relation to their individual giftedness, interest, and talents. This engagement of service learning will help students experience work environments that complement the skills and talents each student possesses to be successful in the professional workforce.

Real-Life Statistics

“When am I going to use this?”, a common student cry in a mathematics classroom, indicates a lack of understanding of the relevancy of course content. To promote real world application of course concepts, I propose that meaningful data be collected from the students and analyzed by the students individually and collectively. This approach not only motivates students to learn about the relevancy of course content, but it also provides a learning community where student support can be realized.

The Math of Mechatronics

Many of the classes the mechatronics students take use basic mathematics, geometry, and trigonometry, but the students in MATH 1010 have yet to see these applications. By bringing examples from those courses into the MATH 1010 curriculum, they will have an opportunity to see real-world examples and the purpose of the abstract mathematical concepts covered in this course
