News: Walmsleys establish scholarship for Roane State students

James Walmsley congratulates scholarship recipients Kaitlyn Stiles, left, and Wade Gargan at Roane County High School’s graduation.

June 7, 2017

Shannon and James Walmsley, DDS, of James D. Walmsley Cosmetic & Family Dentistry of Kingston have established a $4,000 scholarship fund to benefit Roane State Community College students.

Four eligible students will receive $1,000 scholarships. To be eligible for the James Walmsley, DDS Scholarship, a student must be a resident of Roane County and have a minimum 2.75 GPA.

In addition, priority will be given to first generation college students, single working parents, and traditional students with financial hardships.

“We feel blessed to make a difference by giving people the opportunity to be able to provide for their families one day and therefore increase their self-worth and quality of life for themselves and their family,” the Walmsleys said. “Education does just that! It is a platform that can provide options, opportunities, self-respect, personal fulfillment, and hope by providing a path to a career. Being able to help offer that to someone that otherwise may not have the possibility, is a blessing for us as well as Roane County as a whole.”

Dr. Walmsley is a graduate from Midway High School and has been practicing General, Cosmetic, and Implant Dentistry for over 20 years in Kingston.

“We both feel called to make a difference in people’s lives in and out of the office,” he said. “We are busy with three teenagers and a foreign exchange student so we may not always have the time to put in to a cause but believe we can all make a difference by the way we treat people, one experience and interaction at a time. Regardless of whether it is putting a smile on a face, warmth in a heart of a patient in our office, or by someone we meet on the street or talk to on the phone, we all have the power to make someone's day a little brighter and warmer by the way we treat them.”
