News: Why I Love to Learn, Monica Hampton

Monica Hampton

Monica Hampton is a huge supporter of Roane State and says she loves to learn. "First of all, it doesn’t just help me thrive academically, it also makes me grow as a person," she said.

"The more you challenge yourself, the more you can grow," said the 20-year-old, who is the daughter of Charles and Pam Hampton of Harriman.

She believes Roane State offers "a lot of resources and professors that truly want you to succeed. They're accessible; they're in your corner," she said.

Monica is in Roane State's nursing program and plans to graduate with an associate degree in nursing - to earn an R.N. license - in the spring of 2019.

While at Roane County High School, she was in Roane State's dual enrollment program, where she received both high school and college credits. Roane State professors came to the high school to teach multiple classes, and Monica took psychology and sociology.

Dual enrollment was a way to "progress academically and transition out of high school into college," Monica said of her decision to take the program. Her favorite teacher was Professor Darren York, who would begin his psychology class at the high school at 7 a.m.

Between dual enrollment and good scores on advanced placement classes in high school, Monica compiled enough college credit by the end of her first semester at Roane State to be classified as a second-year student. "I was already considered a sophomore, which was really neat," she said.

As a nursing student, “Everything I learn is about helping people. Each lesson is about positively impacting someone’s life. And, most importantly, making that person’s health and quality of life my number one priority. I’m learning to be their best possible advocate. The more I can digest intellectually, the more I can tackle later on," she said.

After graduating from Roane State, Monica said she intends to get a bachelor's degree in nursing at another institution. "My ultimate goal is to be a nurse practitioner where I can call my own shots and think outside the box."

Monica says she wants to become a healthcare professional who makes sure patients' needs are met. "I want to treat them like people, not patients. That's very important to me."

Monica is already telling her two younger brothers "they've got to go (to Roane State).” Brother Noah is in high school, and Monica said she's already urging him to do dual enrollment. Her other brother, Joshua, is in middle school. “Roane State is a great place to go to college,” she said. “It gives you the opportunity to find yourself and figure it all out at your own pace. I want that for them.”

Monica Hampton said she truly appreciates all the opportunities Roane State Community College has offered her. She said, “All of my experiences at Roane State have helped me grow into a stronger student as well as a better person. My professors instilled knowledge and spread passion about their respected fields of study. Roane State is a place that embraces the love to learn indeed.”
