Kayla Laymance stays in a hurry as she furthers her education.

During the spring semester, the 17-year-old went from her classes in Morgan County's Sunbright High School to the Morgan County campus of Roane State, and then on to the college's Oak Ridge campus.

Kayla is in the dual enrollment program at Roane State where she gets both college and high school credits for taking college-level courses.

"I want to do things with my life, and I'm always pushing myself," Kayla said in explaining why she loves to learn.

"I want to get a head start," said Kayla, daughter of Tamra and Keith Laymance of Sunbright.

This spring, she took a Roane State course in U.S. History and then drove to the college's Oak Ridge campus to take a course in psychology.

Kayla said she learned about dual enrollment from her high school guidance counselor. She said she really enjoyed the Roane State history class taught by David Adkins.

Her game plan: complete general college classes by the time she graduates from high school and then continue her education at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., when she intends to study accounting.

She said her interest in accounting was sparked in high school when she began helping the school's bookkeeper in a service learning class.
