News: TCAT donation gives Roane mower a home

A large riding lawnmower that's used to keep Roane State's 42-acre Cumberland County campus looking good has a new home, thanks to the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Crossville.

The large vinyl-covered structure was constructed by TCAT-Crossville's building construction technology students. It had been used for storage on TCAT's Miller Avenue site while students construct a "spec" house sold each year at public auction.

Holly Hanson, director of Roane State's Cumberland County campus, said she had earlier asked TCAT for a quote on constructing a storage building for the mower. The mower has been housed in the campus maintenance building, and personnel have to share space with it.

TCAT's existing storage structure, which measures 12 by 20 feet, became available for free when TCAT received the go-ahead to build a new classroom on the storage building site, Hanson said.

"I really appreciate TCAT's generosity in helping solve a problem we had," Hanson said.

Costs for relocating the storage building were minimal, she said, and it arrived on campus in January. Hanson said the building will be put to use after its doors are modified to accommodate the mower.
