News: Witt named new Roane State athletics assistant

Scott Witt

Aug. 23, 2019

Scott Witt, with 25 years of experience in public school administration, teaching, coaching, has joined Roane State’s athletics department as the new athletics assistant.

"This is a really good hire for us," said Randy Nesbit, who has been the college's athletic director for 26 years and head men's basketball coach for 27 years. "His extensive background includes 10 years as athletic director and assistant principal at Bearden High School."

"I'm very thankful and excited to be here," Witt said. "Roane State is interested in expanding their athletic programs, and I like being part of something that's growing."

Nesbit said Witt's responsibilities will include administrative duties, promotion, fundraising, publicity, and community relations.

"I've always been interested in working at the college level," Witt said. He said he saw an ad for the new Roane State position on the Tennessee Board of Regents' website and said to himself, "This job looks awesome."

"This is an exciting time to be here at Roane State," Witt said. "They have a great administration seeking excellence in academics and athletics. I'm all in, and I'm committed."

Witt received a bachelor's degree in education from University of Tennessee-Knoxville and a master's degree in educational leadership from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.

He's held positions ranging from teacher, coach, athletic director and assistant principal in middle schools and high schools at several public school systems in East Tennessee, including Bearden, Fulton, and Gibbs high schools in Knox County, and in the Grainger, Roane and Cocke County school systems.

"We are extremely fortunate to have someone with such vast experience coming in," Nesbit said of Witt. "Almost as exciting as his background is his enthusiasm for wanting to build our athletic programs to a higher level while representing Roane State in the process."

Witt and his wife, Kerry, a nurse at University of Tennessee Medical Center who is studying to become a nurse practitioner, live in Farragut and have four children ranging in age from 21 to 10.
