Roane State’s new winter term is a godsend for him, says Tennessee Reconnect student Tyler Martin.

Martin says he’s planning to sign up for the online American Government course that will be offered during winter term, which is from Dec. 16, 2019 through Jan. 16, 2020.

It’s part of his plan to attain an associate’s degree in general studies as quickly as he can while continuing to work a demanding full-time job with TDS Telecom. His duties for that telecommunications firm span the Southeast region.

The winter term allows him to obtain college credits “without overwhelming myself,” he said.

Long term, Martin says he wants to obtain a Master of Divinity degree. “I feel this is God’s calling on my life,” he said. “My passion is to serve my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Martin, 27, lives in Vonore with his wife, Bethany. He said he’s been preaching for five years at Poplar Bluff Baptist Church in Tellico Plains and obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies “is the next step.”

He originally enrolled in Roane State right out of high school and was in the community college’s physical therapy assistant program but dropped out because he was offered the opportunity to be an apprentice lineman.

His career path included two years with Service Electric, a contractor for local power companies including Fort Loudoun Electric, followed by a stint as a field service technician with AT&T before landing his current position with TDS Telecom.

Martin said enrolling in Roane State’s winter term “allows me to have a manageable school load while working full time."

Registration for winter term ends Dec. 5, 2019. For more information, go to www.roanestate.edu/winter.

Roane State is a two-year college providing transfer programs, career-preparation programs and continuing education. Founded in 1971, the college has campuses in Crossville, Harriman, Huntsville, Jamestown, Knoxville, LaFollette, Lenoir City, Oak Ridge, Wartburg and Clinton.
