News: Twelve Raiders Named to NJCAA Academic All-American List

September 2, 2020

Roane State Athletics Director Randy Nesbit announced recently that 12 Raiders athletes were named 2020 NJCAA Academic All-Americans. According to Nesbit, “This honor just reflects the overall achievement of our sports teams, which also had the highest graduation rate of any TCCAA member school in the last two years.”

To qualify for the NJCAA All-Academic Awards, student athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.60 or higher. An average of 3.60 to 3.79 is awarded with NJCAA All Academic Third Team Honors. Second Team honors are awarded for an average of 3.80 to 3.99. First Team All-Academic recipients are required to have a grade point average of 4.0.

The Raiders baseball team fielded six of the 12 Academic All-Americans. According to Head Coach Cam Hamsley, “This group mastered the craft of being a student athlete, which is time management.” He added, “These players have big goals to play at the highest level, but they also realize education will improve their lives even after baseball ends.”

As athletes have returned to campus in preparation of a 2021 spring campaign, Hamsley says of his players, “They expect to do well. I hope that mentality invigorates our whole team.”

All Roane State athletics teams are tentatively slated to return to action in January and February 2021, which also marks the institution’s 50th anniversary.
