The academic emphasis includes four courses in project management and project controls. These courses will prepare students for a four-year degree through a Tennessee Transfer Pathway program, a Project Management Institute (PMI) certification, and an exciting and rewarding career in various project management roles.
Students seeking an associate degree in a related program may be able to pursue this emphasis and should speak with their success coach or advisor to determine how best to incorporate these courses into their academic plan.
Note: An academic emphasis will not appear on student transcripts, but can be listed on resumes and job applications. Students will also obtain specialized training and become eligible to test for certifications and other relevant credentials as these courses are completed.
The Project Management / Project Controls curriculum includes the following courses:
1. Project Management Fundamentals I*
This entry-level course introduces students to the principles of project management, including defining a project, understanding project organizations and roles, and describing process groups, lifecycles, and essential knowledge areas associated with most projects.
2. Project Management Fundamentals II*
This entry-level course builds upon Project Management Fundamentals I and discusses adaptive (agile) and hybrid project management techniques, followed by leadership, communication, and soft skills.
3. Project Controls
This intermediate-level course builds upon the Fundamentals courses and focuses on monitoring and controlling process groups, as well as scope, time, cost, and risk management knowledge areas. Students will use Oracle’s Primavera software and be introduced to cost estimating and Monte Carlo risk analysis.
4. Project Management Advanced Topics
This intermediate-level course builds upon the Fundamentals courses and focuses on defining, identifying, and understanding mega projects, highly complex projects, international projects, collaborative projects, and hybrid projects.
*Project Management Fundamentals I and II will provide students with a solid foundation of both traditional and contemporary project management concepts while also preparing them for a Project Management Institute (PMI) Certification.
Coming Soon: Roane State and Tennessee Technological University signed an articulation agreement in the fall of 2025, creating a clear path to transfer for students pursuing degrees with a concentration in project management. This new pathway is a 2+2 program, meaning students can complete a bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Tech without the need to relocate. Between online classes and in-person courses that will be offered at Roane State’s Oak Ridge Campus, students can finish out the full four-year program entirely with Roane State. Pending final approval, the program will be available to students starting in Spring 2026.
