Roane State's Student Tennessee Education Association (STEA) chapter recently collected hundreds of pairs of socks for local schoolchildren as part of its fall service project.
Each semester, the STEA chooses a special project that benefits K-12 students and teachers in our area. The chapter selected "Sock-tober" as the theme for the most recent effort after learning of the need for socks among elementary-aged students.
Donation bins were set up across all of Roane State’s campuses throughout the month of October. After counting and sorting the donations, they had collected 843 pairs of new socks. STEA members then donated the socks to Clinton Elementary School.
Associate Professor of Education and STEA Sponsor Stacie Bradshaw explained that while shoes are frequently donated, socks are not as common but still very much needed.
"Our very own students have noticed that children in the classes they are observing do not have socks that fit them properly, or do not have socks at all," Bradshaw said. "Our hope was to help as many students as possible now that colder weather is here. We want to thank everyone who helped us reach that goal by donating to this project."
Previous STEA service projects have included an Angel Tree to collect gifts for children in foster care and a winter coat drive.
