Overview

The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) program is a four-semester program consisting of two semesters of academic preparation followed by two semesters of full-time speech-language pathology coursework and supervised clinical practicum experiences, culminating in an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree.

The SLPA curriculum is delivered through a combination of online and hybrid courses. Students are required to travel to the campus one to two days per week for hands-on instruction and skills development. Clinical placement assignments are determined based on site availability, alignment with program philosophy, and geographic proximity to the student. Fieldwork education may take place in any approved practice setting that maintains a current Clinical Affiliation Agreement with the institution.

Roane State also offers a one-year Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) Certificate program.

SLPA AAS Program Outcomes

The SLPA AAS program outlines five major goals for its students. Those accepted into the program will:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of professional obligations and ethical standards.
2. Utilize competent verbal and written communication skills.
3. Exhibit collaboration skills with related professionals and patient stakeholders.
4. Demonstrate proficiency in therapeutic skills included in the SLPA scope of practice.
5. Meet professional competencies and employment readiness.

SLPA is a new program at Roane State and does not yet have completion data to share. Graduation rates, pass rates for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) SLPA exam, and job placement rates will be shared here once Roane State collects the information from the first cohort of SLPA graduates.

Admission Requirements

The following requirements will determine successful admission to the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) AAS program:

1. Applicants must be admitted to Roane State Community College (RSCC) and submit official transcripts from high school and all postsecondary institutions previously attended.
    
2. Prior to admission, applicants must complete all required general education and supporting courses identified in the program of study, apart from the humanities elective. A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 in the required prerequisite coursework is required.
    
3. Applicants must successfully complete SLPA 1310 with a grade of C or higher prior to admission to the program.
    
4. To remain enrolled in the SLPA program, students must earn a grade of C or higher in all required courses within the program of study and maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Admission to the SLPA program is competitive. Meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
