Sponsored American flags will also be displayed on select campuses during the week, with the main display planned for the front lawn of the Roane County Campus in Harriman. The flags are part of the college’s ongoing Veteran WAVE project. Each of the flags represents a veteran and is displayed for three years before being retired with honors or returned to the sponsor. This year's flag retirement ceremony is planned for the evening of November 10.
The flag displays are scheduled for the week around Veterans Day as well as Memorial Day through the 4th of July. This year, the deadline to sponsor a new flag for inclusion in the Veterans Day display is October 17. New sponsorships received after this date will begin with the next scheduled display in May 2026 for Memorial Day.
Sponsorship of a 3-foot by 5-foot flag is $80 and includes a 10-foot-tall display pole and a dog tag style marker to identify the veteran and sponsor. A special sponsorship option recognizing a Roane State student veteran is available for $50. Corporate sponsorships are also available.
Roane State President Dr. Chris Whaley called the project “a way for the college to show support for veterans who are members of our campus community as well as other local heroes who have served in the military.”
“We are proud to help honor veterans for their service,” said Dr. Diane Ward, Roane State’s vice president of student learning and one of the project’s organizers. “We hope our community will continue to support the Veteran WAVE effort, either through flag sponsorships, volunteered time, or by helping us spread the word.”
